Etat des lieux

The three of us enjoyed working together on this exhibition, as we found the many connections between our respective work to be rich and meaningful.  The title Etat des lieux was inspired by a book by Deborah Levy (Real Estate in English) which spoke to us on the themes of home, beauty, womanhood and so much more. It also opened space for us to create quite freely and reflect on what our situation, possessions and aspirations were at this point.  Irene’s jewelry tells stories of a place, a lived moment, a memory. Those small wearable artworks are created out of her need to express in a very intuitive process her emotions and her imaginative universe. Her unique pieces are contemporary, with asymmetry at their core, reflecting the imperfect beauty of life itself.  Veronika's paintings evoke the objects that surround us, challenging our perceptions of their value, their fleeting or enduring nature, and our relationship with consumption, the domestic sphere and its significance, as well as exploring the meaning behind the very act of painting these still life pictures. They also depict spaces, real or imagined, much like Deborah Levy describes the homes of several artists, including the one she longs to own and live in, thus opening them to our gaze and imagination. They also represent women -in a deliberate intention to make them more visible: from Edith Sitwell, who greets us at the start of this exhibition, to the anonymous women whose presence fills the canvases that follow, ending with Alice Neel, Suzanne Valadon, and Vanessa Bell, whose whimsical trio close the exhibition. The food has been imagined in dialogue with the themes of the exhibition, reflecting the subjects, colors, and emotions explored in the artworks. Designed as a culinary experience meant to accompany both the viewer and the artists, it seeks to welcome, nourish and foster connection. From the gougères of her childhood to Persian love cakes and pomegranate juice, Pauline's cooking draws inspiration from both her experience and her desire to travel the world, constantly searching for beauty, flavor, and the essence of what makes life rich. ----------  Nous avons pensé et préparé cette exposition en collaboration, et avons trouvé ce travail à trois et les liens entre nos différentes façons de travailler, nos inspirations et nos réflexions riches de sens.  Le titre d’Etat des lieux vient du livre de Deborah Levy (Real Estate en anglais), qui aborde un vaste éventail de sujets qui nous parlent, de la beauté et la créativité à la maison et aux objets, du point de vue situé d’une femme. Mais il nous a aussi ouvert un large espace pour dresser un bilan de nos richesses, de notre situation et de nos aspirations: “où en sommes-nous?”.     Les bijoux d’Irene racontent des histoires d’un lieu, d’un moment vécu, d’un souvenir. C’est le besoin d’exprimer, de façon intuitive, ses émotions et son imaginaire qui l’amène à réaliser ces petites œuvres d’art à porter. Ce sont des pièces uniques contemporaines, asymétriques, comme la vie elle-même, où la perfection n’existe pas.  Les tableaux de Veronika évoquent les objets qui nous entourent, interrogeant leur valeur, leur nature éphémère ou durable, et notre rapport à la consommation, la sphère domestique et son importance, et le sens que peut avoir le fait même de les peindre. Ils montrent aussi des espaces, réels ou rêvés, comme Deborah Levy décrit les maisons de plusieurs artistes et celle où elle rêverait de vivre, les offrant ainsi également à notre regard et notre imagination. Enfin, ils représentent, dans une intention réfléchie et militante, des femmes: d’Edith Sitwell qui nous accueille dans cette exposition, aux anonymes dont la présence habite les toiles qui suivent, pour finir en compagnie d’Alice Neel, Suzanne Valadon et Vanessa Bell en clôture de l’exposition.  La proposition de cuisine a été pensée en lien avec nos conversations et les œuvres présentées (de leurs sujets aux associations de couleurs et d’émotions). Elle veut accompagner à la fois le spectateur et les artistes, accueillir, nourrir et tisser des liens. Des gougères de son enfance aux petits gâteaux d’amour perses et au jus de grenade, la cuisine de Pauline tire son inspiration autant de son expérience que de ses envies de voyages, dans une recherche perpétuelle du beau et du bon.
